It was second century poet Juvenal who coined the phrase “Panem et Cercenses” (bread and circuses) that kept the raucous Roman population content.
Today in Philly, beer is the bread. The city and its environs boasts 29 breweries.
Sporting events are the new circuses.
Alas, the sports scene is a train wreck:

Philly has three all-sports radio stations and the fare is 24/7 bitching, moaning and whining.
The only catnip: Chip Kelly, the rotund renegade new coach of the Eagles (football). He has spent winter and spring firing our greatest stars while taking on a passel of previously grievously-injured players. Hmmmm ...
Dealing with an Unhappy Lowbrow Populace
Meanwhile to calm the restive citizenry, the city fathers have okayed a series of strategically located pop-up parks and beer gardens: Eakins Oval, Broad Street and Independence Mall.
On the banks of the Delaware River is the Spruce Street Harbor pop-up park. Amenities include: beer, shuffleboard, beer, paddle boats, kayaks, beer, 50 double hammocks in the woods for lazing and canoodling, skee-ball, flea market, roller skating rink, food and beer.
