Denny's Zinger: Boys and Their Toys—Drone Delivery Nonsense
In the years after World War II, boys (including me) got into model planes—hot little U-controls and exquisite free flight aircraft. Radio controls were a few years away.
In the 70's and 80's Estes model rockets (a client of mine) captivated a generation of kids as model airplanes did in earlier decades.
Model planes have morphed into drones. Now grown men play war games for real in front of TV screens at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. They pilot unmanned aerial spies and killing machines in the skies over Middle East hostilities with zero risk to themselves.
War is heck.
Amazon's P.R. Coup
Click Here to see Jeff Bezos' dazzling publicity stunt of 2013. A CBS segment on 60 Minutes showed Amazon's future plans to fulfill orders via drones landing in front yards, depositing packages and flying off again.
Two weeks ago, a doohickey on my dishwasher broke.
[See the second image in the media player at upper right.]
In four minutes, I found it online and ordered it with ordinary postage.
Amazingly it arrived through my mail slot the next day!
Drones gumming up the neighborhood to deliver books and tchotchkes is preposterous when a doohickey order arrives within 24 hours and a hot pizza comes in 20 minutes.
Takeaways to Consider:
- Silicon Valley startup Matternet Inc. is into serious drones—such as cheap and efficient drone technology to send crucial goods (e.g., medicines and emergency supplies) into the developing world.
