The Budget Marketer’s Guide to Web Design

A website is your company's window to the world. It is the first point of contact any of your potential customers are likely to have with your business. For that reason alone, it is important to maintain it. An outdated website can be costing you potential customers on a daily basis. Unfortunately for many businesses, website design is costly, and not one that many can afford. But spending more money does not necessarily ensure your success. And, for the budget-conscious marketer, there are many options available that can help you make your company's website spectacular without blowing your budget.

1. Simplicity

The trend in website design is going back to simplicity. Your website, regardless of how the industry may view it, is not being built for your company. Instead, it is being built for your viewers. While a flashy website full of all the latest technologies might be exciting to show off at a trade show, when it comes to getting a reader engaged with your business, simple is better. If you have to build a website on a budget, realize you are better off ignoring your much larger competitors. Those sites were likely built by Web design firms who were able to charge a lot of money and are incorporating a lot of (perhaps unnecessary) technology. Focus on keeping it simple.

2. Education
What many marketers who have no previous history with Web design don't realize is there are a lot of educational options for would-be designers, and many of them are free. W3schools.com, for example, provides plenty of free means to learn anything from JavaScript to CSS3, from HTML5 to ASP.NET. There are thousands of resources available on the Internet via apps, webinars and other learning tools that can get you designing your own site quickly. In addition to education, there are also Web-building tools that are available to marketers for free. Many of these tools allow you to tie in social media streams, blogs and other normal aspects of current websites with the click of a button.

3. Research
The quality of your website is every bit as much about research, dedication and commitment to your customers than it is about high-tech spending. Doing some additional research on your customers can help you create the ideal website that will allow them to interact with you the way they want to. Provide content that you know they like. Again, designing for your customers is a far better option than designing based on what the top players in the industry are doing with technology.
