In a truly borderless economy, marketing technology (MarTech) can originate anywhere across the globe. That's exactly what the startup funding deals from Jan. 17 to 23 showed, as recorded by PitchBook, a Seattle-based M&A, private equity and venture capital database.

Yes, we have 45-plus years of effective self-regulation on our side, and we've navigated fairly well into the digital and mobile age. We've kept self-regulation in marketing, more or less, intact where it comes to fair and free use of marketing data, even as the number of data users has grown extensively.

Quad/Graphics, Inc. (NYSE: QUAD) ("Quad/Graphics") announced on Jan. 16 that it has completed its acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Vertis Holdings, Inc., for a net purchase price of $170 million. This assumes the purchase price of $267 million less the payment of $97 million for current assets that are in excess of normalized working capital requirements. Quad/Graphics used cash on hand and drew on its revolving credit facility to finance the acquisition.

And in terms of the global picture, that means Edmund Optics (EO) needs to speak the languages people use around the world, to understand the language computers use and to recognize what its own people are saying when they need outside help.

That standalone, tip-in brochure that comes with your credit card, bank or utility statement each month—odds are pretty good you toss it into the recycle bin without a second thought. But what if the product or service advertised on that throw-away was instead dropped into a personalized message on the document you actually spend time poring over—the bill?
