Though email increasingly competes with other digital channels for consumers’ time and attention, it continues to be an effective tool for marketers, according to a new eMarketer report, “Email Marketing Benchmarks: Key Data, Trends and Metrics.” Email open rates in North America have risen in recent quarters, even as clickthrough rates have been slipping. Data from Epsilon and Email Experience Council for the last two years showed clickthroughs fell below 5 percent for the first time in the first quarter of 2012.

Commissioned by StrongMail, a provider of email marketing and cross-channel marketing solutions, Consumer Perceptions of Mobile Marketing was carried out in June, quizzing 322 consumers from the general population on a range of mobile marketing methods to find out how brands can reach out to their audience most effectively on mobile devices. For the purposes of the research, mobile marketing was defined as email messages, SMS and in-app messaging accessed via a mobile device. The results provide some concrete answers to questions about what consumers are willing to accept — and the best path towards purchasing.

Mobile Marketing Budgets Small But Growing

A new survey of more than 800 business executives indicates many are increasing mobile marketing budgets this year but face challenges, including a lack of resources to expand mobile efforts. The study by email services provider StrongMail showed 45 percent of companies have adopted mobile marketing, with more than half (57 percent) of those doing so for less than a year. More than 70 percent of managers expect their mobile budgets to increase in the next 12 months, while 55 percent have already done so in the last year.
