Kudos for Kurtz
Great cover story about Brian Kurtz [October 2007, “Direct Marketer of the Year”]. One usually doesn’t expect much from such pieces, but this one dramatically exceeded expectations. Kurtz tells a great story (which perhaps resonates with me because I am a list guy) and is an inspiration. Would that more people gave back to the industry as much as he does. I speak as one of “the few” who do not know him personally, but your piece makes me hope that one day that will change.

Just got home from a trip and saw Brian Kurtz on the cover of Target Marketing as Direct Marketer of the Year. Great choice! I’ve had the privilege of knowing Brian for 12+ years now and have been the beneficiary of his industry education efforts for much longer.
Ad great David Ogilvy said he was looking for “gentlemen with brains.” Well, Marty Edelston snagged one of the best—maybe the best—of his generation when he found Brian.
I’ve just read your Target Marketing article on Brian Kurtz. The profound impact of his mentors impressed me. I believe we could also learn a lot from the right mentors or consultants. While your article suggests there are some who are widely recognized as the best, I have no idea who they are. How can I find out who they are? Is there a list? (That sounds way too simple!)
By way of background, I’m in charge of the business side, including marketing, of AIMS Education Foundation. AIMS creates curriculum (in the form of hands-on activity books) to teach math and science to elementary school students, and supports these with professional development workshops. We do most of our marketing to K-9 teachers and administrators via catalog.
