In February of this year, the Who’s Mailing What! Archive received mostly bundle offers—phone, Internet and television—in the telecom category. Plenty were standard fare with a few interesting details mixed in; meanwhile, a few stood out from the pack.
On the straightforward side, many were self-mailers using one of two formats: either 6˝ x 11˝ with the deal spelled out in colorful detail on the back, or 5-1/2˝ x 8-1/2˝ with the offer unfolding inside its spot-glued corners. BellSouth even jumped in the game with a #10 windowed envelope presenting three sample bundles of its services, and including such premiums as cash back or gas gift cards (Archive code #808-171607-0702).
On the more avant-garde side, Sprint Nextel made its presence felt in the Archive with not one or two different efforts, but six! Nearly all included premiums, however, the telecom’s offerings were more out of the ordinary than most, including a “Hot” info pack—with the odd combination of a whitepaper about Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO) technology and a T-shirt—that prospects can call up on the personalized URL (pURL) address (Archive code #808-173857-0702F).
Another Sprint Nextel mailing, promoting its MOTO Q PDA, has a small map of the nearest Sprint store printed on its outer, just to the left of the address (Archive code #808-173857-0702D).
The company’s foldout 5˝ x 7˝ effort is unusual in several ways. First, on the cover of the mailing, it uses color to promote its red MOTORAZR V3m by featuring an extra-large picture of the fancy phone against its trademark canary yellow backdrop, and inside, prospects are asked to “DO THE (RED) THING.” Second, the mailing targets health care employees, who can take advantage of up to $200 in savings. Third, prospects are reminded that with the purchase of this phone, “Motorola and Sprint will make a contribution to the Global Fund supporting AIDS relief in Africa,” an unprecedented, and perhaps trendsetting, move for a telecom company that simultaneously taps into people’s technological and charitable instincts (Archive code #808-173857-0702A).
