Study Shows Facebook Isn't Just for Kids
Facebook isn't just for kids anymore as users over the age of 55 are increasingly connecting with companies and "Liking" brands on the popular social media site. According to a new eMarketer study, older users are the fastest-growing segment on social media sites. Marketers can't afford to ignore this generation.
In September 2010, only one in four Facebook users in the over-55 demographic had liked a brand, compared to 60 percent of Facebook users aged 18 to 34 who had done so. That gap began to close by November of last year, and by April of this year 59 percent of adult Facebook users had liked a brand — a 47 percent increase from the previous September.
Possible reasons for the increased engagement among adult Facebook users could be the fact that this is the fastest-growing segment of our population. This also leads to speculation that younger boomers could have just as much social engagement potential with brands as millennials and Gen Xers do. And since there's still a good portion of baby boomers who haven't yet liked a brand, there's room for even more growth.
