Denny's Zinger of the Day: John Meffert - Master Marketer of Customer Relationship Magic
Peggy and I have just returned from a seminar for a French client in Lausanne with a riverboat cruise on the Rhône tacked on at the end.
At the boat in Arles, a gaggle of jetlagged travelers were gathered in the Panorama Lounge of Amadeus, unhappy their rooms would not be ready until 4:00 p.m.
Suddenly a big, white-haired bear of a tour leader introduced himself as John Meffert from the sponsor, National Trust.
"This is not on the program," he announced. "You're invited for a short walkabout into Arles. You'll see some sights not covered tomorrow. Anybody who would like to join me please do so!"
For the next six days Meffert was a knowledgeable, funny, upbeat mother hen. For starters when we reached the ancient Roman forum in Arles with John, he gushed, "Think of it, pilgrims! People have gathered here for 2,000 years! Now it's you! Isn't this great!"
Throughout the voyage Meffert would take aside members of his flock to impart some fascinating factoids. Or, he'd leave a scribbled note under our cabin door with an invitation to a private walkabout or to join him at dinner that night.
One afternoon he delivered a brilliant lecture on the reconstruction of Europe after WWII and importance of Gen. George Marshall and the Marshall Plan.
Meffert was indefatigable and a perpetual delight.
A large percentage of our group had signed up because of John Meffert.
