In the first few weeks after its launch, the augmented reality game Pokémon Go became a cultural phenomenon. All kinds of people used their smartphones to enter this virtual world. But there’s a problem: playing the game eats up power. A lot of power.
Enter Larson Electronics, a manufacturer of industrial lighting equipment. It sent an email with the subject line: “Stop Chasing Pokemon & Save 10% on LED Lights.” The top of the email shows the company’s logo, and below it, the Pokémon Go logo against a dark landscape.
Underneath, the headline advises: “Don’t let your phone slow you down. Go!” The product spotlighted is a Dual Light LED Headlamp. It can “provide up to 18 hours of illumination.” The benefit: “so you can hunt for hours on end!” The customer can call the toll-free number for details, or click through for specs, images, a demo video, and pricing.
Other lighting products follow in the email, each continuing the theme. For example, an LED Floodlight will can help to capture “that rare Legendary.” And, a tripod fixture can provide enough light for a while team, “In the forest or in the fields.”
Keep an eye on trending cultural and news events, but take care in considering how to position your products.
