Facebook Local Services Search Takes on Angie’s List
Facebook now houses a search engine for ratings and reviews on local businesses, including services such as plumbing and pet grooming. If it sounds a lot like Angie’s List, Yelp and Amazon Local, that’s because it is, says Seeking Alpha on Tuesday.
“As is the norm for new product launches, Facebook isn't monetizing the service for now,” writes SA’s Eric Jhonsa. “Local business search and directory ads would be a natural fit.”
TechCrunch reports on Tuesday that top-rated businesses don’t necessarily top the list in search results.
“That could mean that Facebook is using other data it knows about the logged-in user,” writes Sarah Perez, “like whether they’ve visited the Page, rated the business, have liked the page or had friends who liked the page, and so on. But that’s all just speculation for the time being.”
I logged into my account and tried to search for “dog groomers” in Philadelphia, and the tool wouldn’t let me do it. I had to either search for “dog walkers” or “dog trainers.” So the options are fairly limited and Jhonsa says the tool is in beta.
“Browsing through category listings provides phone numbers, addresses, links to service provider Facebook pages and average Facebook review ratings,” he notes.
