Denny’s Zinger: Thank You, Burt! You Started a Revolution!
You Are Invited: Be a Commentator!
Last week, I wrote a column titled “Ugly Works in Selling.”
I love it when readers comment on columns. Whether thumbs-up or thumbs-down, interaction is delicious — and valuable.
My lede illustration was a truly ugly off-the-page advertisement by Fred Briesmeister.
Burt Stuttman — son of old-time hawker of how-to books Harry Stuttman — sent me the ugly ad above created by his dad for Doubleday.
I wanted to share Burt’s letter — and grotesque illustration — with readers:
- A ton of product was sold as a result of this ad.
- Burt’s comment expanded on my column, and lobbed a hand grenade at today’s tidy untrained data-driven designers who haven’t a clue how to involve a reader.
A Letter to My Editors
I wrote the editors and asked if the flashy new format enabled readers to not only comment, but also include an illustration to make their point.
Astonishingly, the answer was YES!
This is revolutionary. Readers can now contribute words and images — turning casual columns into vast treasuries of information and ideas!
