Denny's Daily Zinger: Start a Business for 99¢
In my daily Internet surf I came across a story on slate.com with the intriguing headline:
Turn Your Photos
Works of Art, No
Here was an app for sale on iTunes.
- Snap picture with your phone.
- Run it through Waterlogue.
- Print it on archival paper.
- Frame it.
- Voilà! You have a stunning piece of artwork for the wall.
- And it's your art! You made it possible.
Cost of the app: 99¢ on a good day.
It hit me this could be a neat little business—a way for kids to generate money during the summer.
I walk by Philly's Delaware River along Penn's Landing every day. Tourists and locals flock here. Entrepreneurs set up shop—musicians, an occasional magician and a street artist who creates dizzying spray paintings. A cartoonist does caricatures. All visitors have cameras.
Seems to me a kid with the Waterlogue app could set up shop and create delight by turning snapshots into handsome faux watercolors.
Sell them digitally—phone-to-phone—for 50¢ or $1 each. Or bring along a printer and produce beautiful 8-1/2" x 11" "watercolors" archival matte paper right on the spot for $3.
Or take orders for 11" x 17" or 17" x 22" for $10 or $15 respectively and send them out via snail mail. Handsome frame extra.
Takeaways to Consider
- Business ideas are always falling out of the Internet.
- Watch for them!
Denny Hatch’s new book is Write Everything Right! Wes [Wesley Murph, The Marketing Maniac] writes, "I was just dropping you a line to let you know that I totally 'dig' your new book. I haven't gotten through it all. But what I have read, I love. In particular, I really enjoy your style. You call a spade a spade. And what's cool is nine times out of 10 you're dead on the money. Keep up the great work!" Click here to download and read the first three chapters FREE. (Opens as a PDF) Contact him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
