Best Times to Post on Social
This month, Facebook is "significantly" decreasing organic reach for promotional posts from Facebook Pages. So now seems like a good time to take a closer look at an infographic from Quicksprout about the best times of day to post on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram and Google+.
For marketers who find the algorithm change a surprise, here's a rundown of what Facebook will be suppressing as a result of user feedback:
- Posts that solely push people to buy a product or install an app
- Posts that push people to enter promotions and sweepstakes with no real context
- Posts that reuse the exact same content from ads
Published by Quicksprout on Jan. 2, Neil Patel writes that when he posts during his users' preferred times, his social media traffic increases by 39 percent. Shea Bennett of SocialTimes reposted the graphic on Jan. 6, and the synopsis notes the best times to post depend on each brand's audience and goals.
Here's what Quicksprout suggests:
- Facebook: Post around 1 p.m. to gain the largest number of shares and at 3 p.m. for the most clicks. In general, Facebook users log on during the workday, with a slight lull of 3.5 less engagement than average from Monday to Wednesday. Engagement peaks on Thursdays and Fridays, with users being 10 percent happier on Fridays. Quicksprout quotes this from Buddy Media: "The less people want to be at work, the more they are on Facebook."
- Twitter: Clicks peak at noon and 6 p.m. and retweets happen around 5 p.m. In the B-to-B audience, weekdays have 14 percent more engagement than weekends. Conversely, the B-to-C audience prefers weekends and, according to Dan Zarrella, their engagement with brands is 17 percent higher during the weekend. Zarrella announced on Jan. 13 he's leaving HubSpot. (Twitter says, yes, users are 119 percent more likely to use the network during work or school hours and 181 percent more likely to log on during their commutes.)
- LinkedIn: This B-to-B audience wants to see posts from 7 to 8 a.m. and from 5 to 6 p.m., but the worst days to post in the U.S. are on Mondays and Fridays. Most shares happen from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays. This is the best social media lead generation source, say 93 percent of B-to-B marketers.
- Pinterest: Saturday rules. Getting into specifics, e-commerce marketers may want to post at 3 p.m. on Fridays, because that's the best time for "fashion and retail." Other than that, the best times to pin are from 2 to 4 a.m. and 8 to 11 p.m. on Saturdays. Other data indicate 2 to 4 p.m., then 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. ET work well for posts. Activity peaks at 9 p.m.
- Instagram: Usage peaks during non-work hours on Mondays, despite Fortune 500 companies posting during the day with a spike in posts from 3 to 4 p.m. ET.
- Google+: Weekdays during the late morning work best for sharing, with engagement peaking at 9 a.m. on Wednesdays.
