As many brands announce donations to Hurricane Harvey victims, three airlines are proactively offering low fares out of Hurricane Irma’s path in Florida.
“JetBlue, American, Delta Cap Ticket Prices Out of Florida Ahead of Hurricane Irma” Julia La Roche reports for Yahoo Finance on Wednesday. That same day, the Miami-Herald published an Associated Press article titled “Florida AG fighting price-gouging as Irma looms.” (The article states that a couple of airlines the AG’s office contacted were already setting price caps.)
Whether the airlines were anticipating the AG’s move, were interested in gaining good brand buzz or were genuinely concerned about the welfare of those in the path of the latest hurricane, the news is making these airlines look better than the ones charging Miami travelers up to $2,000 to flee.

“Airports will close once sustained winds reach 55 miles per hour,” the Miami-Herald reports on Tuesday. “As of Tuesday afternoon, American Airlines had canceled 35 flights to or from Miami.”
As of midday Thursday, the paper reported American had cancelled 2,000 flights out of Florida.
“The airline said Thursday that the last flight out of Miami will depart to Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas at 3:49 p.m. Friday,” read the article saying flights in Sarasota and Tampa were under evaluation, too.
JetBlue’s fares topped out at $99, American’s at $99 plus tax and Delta’s at $399, Yahoo Finance reports. All three were adding flights in the affected areas as of Wednesday.
While some consumers phoning the Florida AG complained about airfares, AP reports Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi tallied most calls came about outlandish charges on water, food and gas:
The attorney general also said she had been talking directly to retailers such as Amazon. Bondi says the state has received complaints about excessive delivery fees for items such as water. She says the company has told her it suspended 12 third-party vendors because of gouging complaints.
