"SEO is dead! Long live SEO!" might sound familiar to many marketers these days. With Google rolling out new updates and algorithm changes seemingly every other week, it's hard to stay on top of what you need to do to keep yourself ... on top.
Luckily, Tuesday's Target Marketing webinar "5 New Ways Marketers Can Win on Google" had the tips to keep you relevant, straight from Big Fin Solution's Michael Fleischner. While many marketers believe the easy way to the top of search results is to just pay, research has shown that only 18 percent of search clicks go to paid links; 82 percent of searchers aren't fooled by sponsored search links and go right for the organic stuff. Here are Michael's five tips to help you get to the top:
- Google Places
When searching for businesses or services in the past few years, you might have noticed Google's addition of boxes highlighting relevant results in your area. These are built off of the Google Places platform, and are easily leveraged to your advantage! Creating a profile on google.com/business and filling out as much information as possible will dramatically affect your ranking when people are looking for you.
- Data Aggregator
Google serves as an unintentional aggregator of relevant data to your business, so make sure you're to be found wherever possible. Having extant profiles on Yelp, Foursquare and other listing sites will buoy your organic search visibility.
- Add Local Pages to Your Site
First, figure out who your target audience is. Narrow it down as much as possible. Then, add the relevant information to your site. Whether it's a town, city, neighborhood or localized region, it will help Google determine whose searches you're most relevant too.
- Content Is King
By now it's almost an absurdist cliché in the marketing world, but that doesn't make it any less true. Creating original content and becoming a thought leader in your field will make you appear higher in searches on those topics. You, as a person or business, have something that only you can share, so share it! Whether it's research, opinions, art — create content.
- Boost Results
Tie it all together. Share your content or site on social media, and make sure that it's easy to be shared. Put social sharing buttons prominently on your pages, and let your readers or customers become your advocates, too.
