Postal Spotlight: 3GVision Reports Increased Mobile Barcode Usage Nearing USPS Summer Sale
Global mobile barcode usage (including QR Codes) continued to accelerate during the second quarter of 2011, according to a report released by 3GVision in June. This is a potentially significant finding as we near the U.S. Postal Service's Summer Sale on marketing mail that employs 2D barcodes.
3GVision draws its conclusions for global usage of mobile barcodes from the usage of its i-nigma barcode reader, which is believed to be the most widely used 2D barcode reader worldwide. While the report does not include data from Japan, which is known to be the leader in 2D barcode usage, it is one of the few indicators of actual consumer usage of 2D barcodes.
According to the report, worldwide barcode usage increased 88.5 percent in the second quarter of 2011. The United States leads in usage among countries listed and experienced 39 percent growth in Q2 2011 over Q1 2011—which follows explosive, 181 percent growth in Q1 2011 over Q4 2010. Globally, the report shows a significant jump in mobile barcode usage in March that continued through April and May.
