How Google Caffeine Gives Search a Kick

Google recently announced the release of its long anticipated Caffeine algorithm. But what does Caffeine really mean? How does it change search engine optimization?

What’s Caffeine?
The good news is that for all of the anticipation about the potentially devastating effects of Caffeine on existing search results, its release for the most part had minimal impact on rankings. Google defined the Caffeine update in this June 8 blog post:

“Caffeine provides 50 percent fresher results for web searches than our last index, and it’s the largest collection of web content we’ve offered. Whether it’s a news story, a blog or a forum post, you can now find links to relevant content much sooner after it is published than was possible ever before.”

In other words, Caffeine simply incorporates faster indexing capabilities to promote fresh content more quickly than before.

How does Caffeine change SEO?
Because Caffeine affects the indexing speed rather than how web pages are ranked, it fortunately doesn’t change much of the SEO tactics you’re already doing. However, as always, websites with barriers to indexing will continue to have issues under Caffeine. Be sure that your website is indexable and uses XML Sitemaps to encourage Googlebot to index more content on your site more often.

How can you take advantage of Caffeine?
First, if you don’t have a blog, get one! As Google mentions in its description, Caffeine’s goal is to index news-related content faster. Most corporate websites, however, have little news-related content. That’s where a blog comes in. A blog provides companies with a mechanism to create fresh, newsworthy content regularly.

Next, if you’re not doing so already, start monitoring your social media efforts. Specifically, monitor Google Insights for Search for hot, trending topics regarding your brand name, your competitors and your keywords. When you see a spike in searches, it’s time to jump into action.
