The Passing of Sid Caesar
Caesar was a maniac—addicted to pills and booze. In 1957, I was an NBC page and worked the short-lived Caesar's Hour at the Century Theater off 59th Street. TV was live in those days. I remember a doctor chasing Caesar around backstage brandishing two syringes. One hyped him. The other calmed him down.

I never understood how a guy could live like that.

He was damn lucky to have lasted until age 91.

Caesar had a blue Cadillac limo with white leather roof and blue carriage light on top. After every show, the limo would be idling by the stage door. In it were Caesar's driver, agent, wife and Caesar himself, presumably decompressing. The limo would just sit there a long time.

Caesar's Secret: Writers
Sid Caesar was a hilarious man, blessed with a team of magnificent writers.

  • Woody Allen
  • Neil Simon (the most successful playwright in the history of American theater)
  • Carl Reiner
  • Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H, Tootsie, Oh, God, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum)
  • Mel Tolkin (All in the Family)
