Denny's Daily Zinger: What Jobs, Woz and I Have in Common
We all have a joint 30th anniversary.
Why did Woz and Jobs create riches beyond the dreams of avarice while Peggy and I did not?
The Apple founders had the ability to focus like lasers on their dream. They also had the brass balls to work like dogs and bet the ranch every step of the way. They changed the world à la Henry Ford and Thomas Edison.
Thirty years ago, did the founders see Apple atop the Fortune 500? I doubt it. They were too busy "doing their thing."
Our Pipsqueak Niche Business
Compared to the two Steves, Peggy and I were cowards. We created a niche service (newsletter and archive). When we were flush with renewal cash, we went to Europe. When money was tight, we stayed home and I freelanced.
Yeah, we couldda bet the house and all our savings. But in the '80s, too many hotshot entrepreneurs were going under.
We clearly saw the future: a possibly useful service to revolutionize direct mail analysis and a modest sale to supplement Social Security.
Do I envy Woz and Steve? Certainly not Steve Jobs.
He was a world-class son of a bitch.
Woz strikes me as a good guy who got out when the getting was good.
Meanwhile, we saw a lot of the world. No complaints.
Happy anniversary, all!
