Denny’s Daily Zinger: Am I Losing My Mind?

Read this email.

I recently received an email from Barbara Collura, President/CEO of RESOLVED: The National Infertility Association.
Her lede:

Dear Friend of RESOLVE,

Thank you for becoming part of RESOLVE. When you registered through you became part of the RESOLVE community and an organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of women and men during their family building journey.

I have never had children. I have never wanted children. I do not like children.

I cannot believe I ever registered with this organization.

Let me share with you a story.

On the three big summer holidays, we have a block party on our little Philly street. Traffic banned. Potluck hot dogs, beer, sodas and salads.

At one of these affairs I found myself standing opposite a bald, white-goateed scientist named Bruce Smith. On my left and right were two women—young moms—talking and talking and talking about their children.

Realizing Bruce and I were being left out of the conversation, one of the women turned to me and said, “Oh, and do you have children, Mr. Hatch?”

“In three marriages I have never had children,” I replied. “In fact, I wake up every morning and thank God I’m sterile.”

“Denny,” Bruce Smith said, “everybody in Philadelphia thanks God you’re sterile.”

Takeaway to Consider

  • Can it be a marketing ploy of organizations to send welcome letters thanking people for registering when they haven’t registered for membership?

Denny Hatch’s new book is “Write Everything Right!” Chip Fichtner writes, “Denny: Almost through it. Great as always. Question: With any good book I like to buy a dozen and give to friends and employees. Should I buy direct through you or from Amazon?” Click here to download (opens as a PDF) and read the first three chapters FREE. The title is also available on Kindle. Reach Denny at

I got one this morning saying, "Since you have expressed interest in hosted VoIP … " I don’t even know what "hosted VoIP" is. Yes, I do believe direct marketers are using this as a marketing ploy. A variation on "If the list in which I found your name is any indication … "

YOU may not have registered yourself to receive RESOLVE emails, Denny, but one of those two neighborhood mothers you met at your block party may have. Or, perhaps, your friend Bruce …….. ; )

Denny, are you saying you wouldn’t have liked yourself as a child? I started my family accidentally, and it changed my life for the better. I think you may have missed a big part of life.

@Denny You are a national treasure!

Perhaps RESOLVE wanted to be included in "Who’s Mailing What?"
