With everything free, the tragedy of the Internet is the modern-day Tragedy of the Commons.

It got more response than anything I’ve ever written.

A guy from the USPS called it “a billion-dollar idea.”

I’m sick of spammers, snoops, lawyers and nannies.

Above all, I’m sick of free.

It’s time to pony up 1 cent per email.

Maybe even 2 cents.

    My fear is, they’ll charge you 2 cents an e-mail and then they’ll also read your e-mail. And if that works out for them, they’ll incrementally raise the price to a buck. And then they’ll tell you they’re reading your e-mail so they can give you your money’s worth by deluging you with ads that interest you.

    Personally, when it comes to important stuff, whether for transacting many kinds of personal business communications, or for paying bills, or for sending people direct response advertising, I prefer the USPS. While it lasts.

    • 1¢ or 2¢ per e-mail sent out.
    • 1¢ or 2¢ per e-mail received, paid for by the sender.
    • If senders don’t want to participate, they can send free replies to senders’ Yahoo, Gmail or AOL accounts.
