- Download a 50-cent coupon for Cheerios—or give Bisquick a thumbs-up—and you've forfeited your rights to sue General Mills. Lawyers 1 - Us 0. [This policy changed on Saturday, allowing customers the right to sue.]
- Google just announced it's reading all your emails "to create targeted ads." Snoops 1 - Us 0.
- I can't reach out to fellow professionals about my new book on writing because I don't have a double opt-in agreement with them. Nannies 1 - Us 0.
The New Tragedy of the Commons
Last June I wrote a column, "I'll Happily Pay for Email."
It got more response than anything I've ever written.
A guy from the USPS called it "a billion-dollar idea."
I'm sick of spammers, snoops, lawyers and nannies.
Above all, I'm sick of free.
It's time to pony up 1 cent per email.
Maybe even 2 cents.

"Your new book is good too! I'm a third of the way through and have already dog-eared numerous pages in both glee and frustration." —Liz Kislik
