  • In 1922, Ernest Hemingway's wife, Hadley Richardson, left both the original manuscripts and carbon copies of all the early short stories on a train in the Gare de Lyon in Paris. They were never found.
  • T.E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") left the original manuscript of his "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" in the café of the Reading railroad station in England and never found it.

My Father's Technique

As a kid, I vividly remember how my father worked. He scrawled all 40 of his books in unreadable pencil script on lined paper. Every couple of days we would drive over to the house of his secretary, who typed two copies—an original and a carbon. The first copy was for editing. The second copy was immediately stored in the trunk of the car, so if the house burned down, his work would not be lost.

What I Do—A Safe Plus Carbonite
Weekly I back up everything onto an external drive, transfer it all to my laptop and store the drive in my safe.

I also subscribe to Carbonite. These folks have perpetual access to my computer. If a gas explosion takes out my house (and not me), I can retrieve all my files from Carbonite.

This morning I received an email from Carbonite saying the back-up was not working. I called customer service and gave Sandi the keys to my computer. She spent a wearying hour troubleshooting, finally righting the situation.

At $59.95 a year, I sleep soundly with Carbonite.
