A right-wing think tank in the United States has issued a white paper criticising the “disturbing” lack of speed at the U.S. Postal Service in responding to declining mail volumes. The Congressional advisory note from the Washington DC-based Institute for Research on the Economics of Taxation (IRET) assessed USPS in comparison to nearly 60 of the world’s major postal services during the recession and its aftermath. It said “most” foreign postal services had managed to restore profitability and remain financially viable despite electronic diversion of mail and the impact of the global downturn....

The U.S. Postal Service has launched a new mobile application for iPhone users that allows them to use the device’s camera to scan barcodes on shipping labels for quick, easy and convenient tracking of their packages and other mail. The application stores the label numbers so customers can easily recheck the status of their shipments. The scanner function is available on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad 2.
USPS Cleared to Offer More Payment Options for Direct Mailers

The US Postal Service has been given the green light to allow its major direct mail customers new ways to pay for their mailings. U.S. regulators approved changes on Wednesday, which would mean that companies that have a negotiated service agreement with USPS would no longer have to pay up front before they can mail their advertising materials.
